While age-related macular degeneration \u2013 as the name suggests \u2013mainly affects the elderly, diabetic retinopathies are the most common cause of blindness in people of working age. Around 540 million people worldwide <\/strong>live with diabetes \u2013 and the number is constantly rising. One of the most serious consequences is the development of a diabetic retinopathy. <\/strong>Around one in three people with diabetes <\/strong>develops some form of this retinal damage during the course of their condition.<\/p>\n

\u200b\u200b\u200b\ud83d\udca1\u200b\u200b\u00a0\u00a0 What does this mean for those affected?
\n<\/strong>Retinopathies often go unnoticed at first, but if left untreated, they can lead to severe vision loss<\/strong>. For patients, this is often associated with major impairments<\/strong>, loss of quality of life<\/strong> and stress<\/strong> at work and in their personal environment.<\/p>\n

\u200b\ud83d\udc41\ufe0f\u200d\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f Treatment options<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>If detected early, the chances of successful treatment are now better than ever \u2013 for example, with anti-VEGF therapies<\/strong>. They stop the pathological formation of new blood vessels in the retina<\/strong> and can significantly slow down<\/strong> the progression of the disease. However, these often very expensive treatments are not yet available to all patients.<\/p>\n

\u200b\u200b\ud83c\udfaf\u200b Improving access to anti-VEGF therapies
\n<\/strong>Formycon has made it its mission to improve access<\/strong> to such therapies worldwide.
